G2 Road Test vs G Road Test

Ontario's graduated licensing system uses two road tests. Each stage assesses a different level of driving experience.

G1 → G2

G2 Road Test

Demonstrate safe basic driving skills and vehicle control in everyday driving situations.

The simple difference:

Think of the G2 test as demonstrating that you can safely handle everyday driving. The G test builds on those skills and assesses your ability to handle more advanced situations, particularly major roads and expressways.

How to Prepare for Your Ontario Road Test

Preparation isn't just about practising a route. Focus on safe, consistent driving habits that you can demonstrate throughout the test.

Practise Regularly

Build experience in different traffic conditions. Practise the manoeuvres relevant to your test until they feel natural and controlled.

Focus on Observation

Develop a consistent routine for mirrors, blind spots, intersections and scanning for pedestrians, cyclists and other hazards.

Know Your Vehicle

Practise in the vehicle you plan to use where possible and make sure you are comfortable with its controls, size and visibility.

Prepare for Test Day

Check your appointment, licence, vehicle condition and required items before leaving for the test centre.

Before You Leave for Your Road Test

A little preparation can help avoid unnecessary problems when you arrive. Give yourself plenty of time and make sure both you and your vehicle are ready.
