When you first get into a car, all the buttons and gadgets can seem a bit overwhelming. One of the many features of a car is its lights, and there are plenty of them!

So that’s why in today’s post, we are going to give you the rundown of which lights to use, and when.

First, let’s go through the different types of lights that a car has:

  • Full beam headlights
  • Dipped beam headlights
  • Sidelights
  • Rear fog light
  • Front fog light

Now let us explain each of their purposes.

Headlights

When it comes to headlights, there are two types that you will use, these are the full beam and dipped beam headlights These are both used for dark conditions where visibility is restricted.

The dipped beam will generally suffice for most situations and will allow other drivers to see you in the dark.

However, if your visibility is particularly low, then you can use the full beam to see further and more clearly.

It is important to note that you must switch to the dipped beam if you see cars in front of or coming towards you, or if you are behind another vehicle.

Full beam can be dangerous if left on as it can blind other drivers so you should take extra care when emerging from a corner, a side street or a drive.

Sidelights

The main purpose of sidelights is to make yourself more visible to other drivers. They do not actually provide much visibility for you, but they will help others, especially in poor conditions.

It is also mandatory that you leave your sidelights on while parked on dark roads that have a speed limit over 30+ so that others can see you with time to react.

Fog Lights

Both of your fog lights serve the same purpose, and that is to help you see and be seen in foggy conditions.

One thing to note when it comes to fog lights is that you must ONLY have them on when the conditions are poor.

If you have your fog lights on when it is not foggy, you can be fined! So make sure to turn them off and switch back to the appropriate lights.
